Slash ministers’ allowance by half, Government urged

PETALING JAYA: The Government should slash ministers’ entertainment allowance by half in line with the increase in fuel prices.

The 10% cut announced was not enough to prove that the Government understood the pain felt by the people, said DAP Ipoh Timur MP Lim Kit Siang.

Lim added that when the Government chose to raise fuel prices, moves to mitigate inflation should also have been part of the plan.

“The recent announcements are ‘afterthoughts’ in the wake of public anger and outrage over the hefty fuel price rise,” he said. “They not only come too late but also show a lack of seriousness.”

He added that the Government had yet to learn its lesson from the March 8 polls because there was no sign that the Government was prepared to end wasteful policies.

Meanwhile, Bernama reported from Putrajaya that PAS Youth wanted the Government to scrap or put on hold mega projects, including the corridor development projects.

Its deputy chief Nasrudin Hassan said the Government should instead focus on programmes that could improve the livelihood of the people.

The Government should also emphasise projects that could benefit the people in the rural areas, such as water and electricity supply, he told reporters after handing over a memorandum against the fuel price rise at the Prime Minister’s Department yesterday.

The memorandum was received by the prime minister’s senior private secretary Datuk Ahmad Yacob.

In it, PAS Youth chief Salahuddin Ayub urged the Government to revoke the fuel price increase.

Nasrudin said PAS would hold a gathering at the Kampung Baru Mosque in Kuala Lumpur on Friday to protest against the fuel price rise.
