1,134 heavy vehicle accidents along NSE last year

MALACCA: A total of 1,134 accidents involving heavy vehicles occurred along the PLUS North-South Expressway last year according to highway operators.
Plus Expressways Berhad (PLUS) operation's manager Mohammad Fuad Khusairi said that accidents involving heavy vehicles are a concern for the authorities as they usually result in loss of lives or serious injuries to victims.
“According to statistics, there were 1,134 heavy vehicles involved in accidents along the PLUS highway in 2007 compared to 1,123 in 2006, " he said during the closing ceremony of “Respect Your Limits” seminar organised by PLUS and the Road Transport Department (JPJ) here recently.
He said that most accidents involved vehicles such as buses and lorries and could have been avoided if drivers knew their physical limits and that of their machines.
“Drivers often neglect their physical ability. They continue driving although they feel tired or sleepy and these distract them from staying alert on the road.
“Eventually, they get involved in accidents which victimised other passengers and road users,” he said.
He also noted that most of the accidents were not caused by the road condition or structure but negligence and carelessness of drivers who speed.
As a result, he added, “many lives were sacrificed. And the loss of lives on the road is a great loss to their families and the nation.”
Meanwhile, PLUS Traffic Information and Analysis Unit’s assistant manager Mizahanita Md Din encouraged highway users to utilise the convenience and emergency aid provided along the highway.
She also reminded drivers not to indiscriminately stop along the highway’s emergency lane without any proper indication or signs as they may not be noticable to other motorists.
