PLUS: Most accidents caused by drivers
MALACCA: Most of the 1,134 accidents involving heavy vehicles on the North-South Expressway last year could have been avoided if drivers had known their limits.
Drivers often neglect their physical limitations. They continue driving although they feel tired or sleepy and these distract them from staying alert on the road.
Eventually, they get involved in accidents and other passengers become victims, said PLUS Expressways Berhad operations manager Mohammad Fuad Khusairi at the Respect Your Limits seminar.
He said most of the accidents were not caused by the road conditions or structure.
The number of accidents of heavy vehicles last year showed a slight increase from the 1,123 reported in 2006.
PLUS Traffic Information and Analysis Units assistant manager Mizahanita Md Din encouraged motorists to use the facilities provided along the expressway.
She reminded drivers that it was dangerous to indiscriminately stop at emergency lanes without any proper indication or signs.
