Bernas reduces fragrant rice’s price

KUALA LUMPUR: Bernas will reduce its wholesale price of fragrant and glutinous rice from midnight today.

Its managing director Bakry Hamzah said this was possible because “we managed to buy fragrant rice from Thailand at a very low price very, very recently”.

He said the price of Thai AAA fragrant rice would be cut from RM4,700 to RM4,000 per metric tonne or a 14.89% reduction.

“As for Thai A fragrant rice, it will be reduced from RM4,600 to RM3,900 per metric tonne.

“For glutinous rice, we are reducing the price from RM3,350 to RM3,000, about 11.6% lower,” he told the press at the Food Crisis Seminar here yesterday.

He said the price of fragrant and glutinous rice saw a drop of about RM320 (US$100) per metric tonne in the past week, which he described as “a very sharp drop”.

He said retail prices should be “cheaper by about 70 sen per kilo”.

The price for normal rice, however, will not change for now.

“The price is going down too, but not as fast as fragrant rice, so we will have to see.

On sugar, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohd Zain Mohd Dom said the Government was expected to sign a new long-term agreement with Australia by the end of the year.
