Government to table DNA Bill next month
Compiled by LEE YUK PENG, JANE RITIKOS and A. RAMAN
THE Cabinet has directed the Home Ministry to table a DNA Bill in the Dewan Rakyat during its sitting in August that would make it illegal for anyone to refuse DNA testing in criminal cases, Nanyang Siang Pau reported.
The daily said once the bill was passed, it would also enable the Government to set up a DNA data bank.
In a way, this would assist police in their investigation, the daily said.
Quoting Datuk Chor Chee Heung, the daily said if the Home Ministry could not table the bill in August, then the bill would be tabled by the end of the year.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Syed Albar had said that the bill was now at the final stage of drafting and was expected to be tabled soon.
Explaining the reason for fine-tuning the bill, Syed Hamid was quoted earlier as saying that the bill had been outstanding for quite a long time and he decided to cover all possibilities, including the latest technological development in DNA testing.
Once the bill is passed, the police could set up a DNA databank to store DNA samples of suspects.
The private sector could also apply for permits to set up DNA analysis laboratories, reducing the burden of the government, the daily said.
