MCA division polls race starts

PETALING JAYA: The race has begun for the MCA division polls with 79 of the 191 divisions seeing contests for the top posts.

There will be challenges in 19 out of 22 divisions in Selangor which has the most number of central delegates to the national elections in October.

The remaining three divisions in Selangor – PJ Selatan, Ampang and Subang – were won uncontested by incumbents Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai, Low Kim Mang and Lee Wei Kiat.

The proceedings of the division nomination, which started at 4pm and ended at 8pm yesterday, went smoothly at their respective division centres nationwide.

Polling for the division Youth and Wanita wings will be on Saturday and the parent-body on the following day.

In Bakri, incumbent Datuk Chua Jui Meng, who is trying to make a political comeback, faces a three-cornered fight against the division’s treasurer Tay Khim Seng and William Tan Geok Chan, a branch deputy chairman.

In contrast, former vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek won the Batu Pahat chief post uncontested. He had resigned from the post after a sex video featuring him was made public earlier this year.

The two Chuas are said to be eyeing the party presidency. So far, only party vice-president Datuk Ong Tee Keat has announced his intention to contest for the top post.

Another vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Fong Chan Onn is being challenged for his Alor Gajah chairman’s post by his vice-chairman Ngow Duo Soon.

In the Johor Baru division, Youth secretary-general Dr Wee Ka Siong won the chairman's post uncontested after incumbent Datuk Freddie Long pulled out at the last minute.

In Perak, party secretary-general Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan and central committee member Datuk Kong Cho Ha were returned unopposed in the Tapah and Lumut divisions respectively.

Ong, who is also party election steering committee chairman, urged party members not to carry out personal attacks or get involved in immoral acts, such as violence or money politics during this campaign period.

“I hope those who participate in the elections will abide by the election rules to ensure that the democratic process is carried out smoothly.

“Given the mandate to a party post is not about an individual’s gain or loss, face or glory but about shouldering the responsibilities that come with the position,” he said.

In Wangsa Maju, incumbent Datuk Yew Teong Look is being challenged by his division Youth chief Datuk Ng Siew Hong.
