Pupils to be tested on all-round development instead of just exams

Education director-general Datuk Alimuddin Mohd Dom said this meant pupils would not just be tested on what they have learnt in a centralised examination.

“Instead, we will base the pupils’ assessments on several approaches, including psychometric tests, school-based assessments and achievements in co-curricular activities and sports,” he said after being interviewed on the ministry’s weekly educational television programme, Laman Minda.

Alimuddin said the pilot project started in June this year.

He said the proposal for more schools to use the school-based assessment would be presented to Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein next month.

“We will brief him on the pilot project and see if we need to make any changes to the assessment process,” he said.

Once the teething problems are ironed out, he said the pilot project would be extended to 500 schools nationwide next year.

This would be further extended to all Year One pupils in primary schools from 2010 at the completion of the National Education Blueprint 2006-2010.

Last August, Hishammuddin said pupils sitting for the Primary School Achievement Test (UPSR) would be assessedon what they have learnt in school as well as their involvement in co-curricular activities, once the examination revamp was completed.
