Roadblocks part of regular crime prevention

PETALING JAYA: Police say the roadblocks around Kuala Lumpur and here on Saturday were part of the normal crime prevention measures.
Several readers had called The Star office in Petaling Jaya on Saturday expressing concern that several roadblocks had been set up around Kuala Lumpur and here, causing traffic jams. Some even questioned whether the roadblocks were in any way related to Sunday's rally organised by the Coalition Against Inflation (Protes) at Stadium Kelana Jaya here.
Police say the roadblocks around Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya on Saturday were part of the normal crime prevention measures and did not have any connection with the Coalition Against Inflation (Protes) rally at Stadium Kelana Jaya on Sunday. Selangor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said the roadblocks were part of normal crime prevention measures and were not meant to stop people from attending Sunday's rally.
"We are not stopping anyone from moving around.
"There was a robbery in Kepong on Saturday, thus the reason for the extra roadblocks on top of the usual crime prevention ones," he said.
DCP Khalid added that a sufficient number of police personnel would be deployed during Sunday's rally.
He said police have taken enough precautionary measures and they were prepared for all possibilities in the eventuality of any untoward incidents during the rally.
He said no decision has been made to close the roads around the Kelana Jaya area because he believed the rally would be held peacefully.
However he reminded people participating in the rally to adhere to any instructions by the police to avoid any action being taken against them.
"In case things turn ugly, we would not hesitate to arrest those responsible for uttering seditious remarks or causing trouble during the rally," DCP Khalid said when contacted Saturday.
He said the action that might be meted out by the police was not to trouble anyone but for public safety.
