ACA nabs KTM manager who fleeced station tenants
JOHOR BARU: The Anti-Corruption Agency has detained a KTM manager for allegedly taking bribes to extend shoplot tenancy agreements at KTM's Tanjung Pagar station in Singapore.
Officers from the state ACA arrested the 53-year-old manager at about 3.30pm in Kuala Lumpur.
The manager is believed to have demanded about S$50,000 (RM120,000) from Singaporeans operating shops at the station.
The station has more than a dozen shops selling souvenirs, books and food. The Singapore government leased the land on which the station and railway tracks are situated for 999 years.
The ACA began investigations after a 65-year-old Singaporean alleged that a KTM official had been demanding S$50,000 to extend his three-year tenancy agreement on a food stall he had been operating for 10 years.
The money was for a processing fee to guarantee that the agreement would be extended.
Despite receiving the amount, the official demanded for an additional S$10,000 (RM24,000).
KTM is renting out retail space in the station for between RM10,000 and RM20,000 per month.
Investigations showed that the manager could have received huge kickbacks for several years.
Johor ACA director Simi Abdul Ghani urged those with information to contact the ACA hotline at 07-224 1982 or 1-800-88-6000.
