By RASLAN BAHAROM
TAIPING: Police detained three men and seized 1.16kg of heroin from a hotel room here and a car parked nearby early Monday.
About RM10,000 in cash was also confiscated, along with the drug estimated to have a street value of about RM30,000.
Taiping deputy OCPD Supt Syed A. Wahab Syed A. Majid said the drug, in granules, was found in six large plastic packets.
"Three of the large plastic packets were recovered from the hotel room while three others were found in a Proton Perdana Executive parked outside the hotel," he told a press conference Tuesday.
A total of 39 smaller packets were found inside the six packets, he added.
Supt Syed A. Wahab said the three suspects, aged between 29 and 41, were being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act which provides for the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
"The suspects who are locals are being held on a three-day remand order to facilitate our investigation," he said.
He said a 10-member police party from the district narcotics branch, led by Insp Mas Norashikain Md Satar, conducted the raid following a tip-off from the public.
On another matter, he said a Thai national died in an apparent assault following a drinking spree at a fishing village in Teluk Kertang, Matang, near here at about 3am Tuesday.
Supt Syed A. Wahab said a suspect, also a Thai national was being held for questioning and the case was being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
Responding to a question, Supt Syed A. Wahab said he could not ascertain whether the deceased and the suspect were legitimate foreign workers employed by local fishermen but the initial investigation showed they possessed international passports.
No weapons, apart from broken bottles, were found at the murder scene, he added.
