SMS reminders to renew road tax soon

By PAUL CHOO

PUTRAJAYA: Forgetting to renew your road tax will soon be a thing of the past once an SMS alert service is launched at the end of this month.

The initiative follows collaboration between the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Malaysian Administrative, Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (Mampu) to provide an "instant" expiry notice to motorists.

In order to receive the service, motorists would only have to register with government portal e-Kl, an initiative by Mampu to improve the public delivery system.

Full details of the move however, will only be revealed on July 31, according to JPJ deputy director-general Datuk Solah Mat Hassan.

"Motorists will no longer have any excuse to forget to renew their road tax. All they have to do is register for this service.

"But we are still in the midst of ensuring there are no kinks in the system, so all will be revealed by the end of the month," he said during a press conference Monday.

In the same light Solah urged motorists to break out from their reservations in using the recently launched e-services (www.myeg.com.my and www.jpj.gov.my) to renew their road tax.

He said many Malaysians were still "afraid" and not accustomed to getting the job done with a click of the mouse.

"It is very convenient, and what's more Mampu implements a three-level security check on each transaction, which is then matched to our database.

"There should be no worry of things such as identity theft (from use of credit cards) or misappropriation of personal information," reassured Solah.
