Free water for 15,000 homes in Perak

IPOH: Some 15,000 households in Perak will get the first 20cu metres of water free from September.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said the move was to help alleviate their burden due to rising costs.

“They are not from the hardcore poor group but they are people who are earning between RM420 and RM700 a month,” he said at a press conference yesterday to mark Pakatan Rakyat’s 100th day in Perak.

Nizar said it would cost the Perak Water Board some RM2mil a year to provide the free water. “We will take about two weeks to come out with the instruction and the consumers will be able to see the effect in their September water bill,” he added.

On land titles for new villages, kampung tersusun (planned villages) and orang asli settlements, Nizar said the people could decide on the number of years they wanted for the titles.

“We will not force them. They can opt for 30, 60 or 99 years or for freehold titles,” he said, adding that the titles would be given in stages to all residential areas in the state.

The number of years, he said, would determine the amount to be charged for premium and quit rent.

He noted that the Malays would benefit most from the titles because they made up the most number of people to obtain the titles.

There are over 72,000 titles covering an area of 2,832ha in planned villages compared with more than 43,000 titles covering less than 2,023ha in new villages, he said.

Earlier, Nizar asked the media not to make mistakes when reporting the one-time waiver of compound notices for hawking and parking offences.

“Please repeat after me. Now one, two, three and say ‘notices to compound’. If you don’t, I will stop the press conference,” he said.

Nizar also announced that the state would be holding a seminar to look at the potential of tin mining in a bid to reactivate the industry.

“We are opening up avenues for miners with the experience and licence to carry out tin mining,” he said.

On criticisms by his brother Fadhil Jamaluddin that Nizar had entered into a pact with the DAP to not champion the Islamic state issue, Nizar replied: “I have 14 brothers. We criticise each other every day.”
