Felda lands big oil palm plantation project in Brazil

PUTRAJAYA: Felda has been offered to open a 100,000ha oil palm plantation in Manaus and Tefe near the Amazon River in Brazil.

The joint venture project will see Felda holding 70% equity while Brazil’s Braspalma will own the remaining 30%.

In making the announcement Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Felda Global Ventures Brazil Sdn Bhd would be set up with a paid up capital of RM25mil for the project.

Initially Felda will develop 20,000ha in Tefe and the agreement stipulated that oil palm would be planted on between 3,000ha and 5,000ha every year, he said.

Najib said Felda wants to be an active global player and would venture to foreign countries to invest to add to its gains.

“If Felda makes it big, it will be able to conduct its local projects such as offering skills training courses for its settlers and their families, offer attractive bonus for its shareholders and duit raya,” he told reporters after launching Felda’s Settlers’ Day celebration yesterday.

During the celebration, Felda Semenchu in Johor won RM1mil cash for being the winner in the best Felda scheme competition held in conjunction with the event.

Due to Felda’s successful ventures, Najib said it could afford to offer such high prize money.

Projects in the pipeline for Felda, he said, were a plant refinery project in Quebec, Canada, and oil palm plantation ventures in Papua New Guinea (105,000ha) and Acheh (45,000ha), and a 20,000ha nursery in Kalimantan.

Earlier in his opening address, Najib said Felda had diversified into producing household items like furniture, clothes and food and was working towards realising its dream of having its own multi-storey building in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.
