Unhappy Barisan reps walk out of State Assembly

KOTA BARU: The Barisan Nasional-led Opposition walked out of yesterday’s State Legislative Assembly sitting here after Speaker Mohd Nassuruddin Daud dismissed its attempts to seek an explanation on why its verbal and written questions were rejected.

Mohd Nassuruddin said the questions posed were irrelevant and that many had been answered before.

An argument then ensued between Opposition Leader Datuk Md Alwi Che Ahmad (BN – Kok Lanas) and the Speaker where the former refused to back down, insisting that the questions needed to be answered as they involved issues of public interest.

Minutes later, Alwi stormed out followed by the five Umno assemblymen – Datuk Noorzahidi Omar (BN – Pengkalan Kubor), Ab Aziz Derashid (BN – Kuala Balah), Datuk Nozula Mat Diah (BN – Paloh), Mohd Adhan Kechik (BN – Bukit Bunga) and Mat Yusof Abd Ghani (BN – Nenggiri).

The assembly continued with several PAS assemblymen making remarks that it was unprofessional of Barisan to walk out.

Later, Alwi told a press conference that Barisan was upset not just because its questions went unanswered but also due to the arrogant and dubious replies given before the sitting commenced yesterday.

“I asked about the plight of small-scale traders in view of giant supermarkets mushrooming, on replanting of trees felled under logging concessions and how was the state was overcoming its Budget deficit.

“There was one answer which stated why should I ask such a question when I sit on a House sub-committee. I cannot recall ever being offered to sit in any House committee. These are flimsy excuses. I agree that there is now just too much politics, dirty politics,” said Alwi.
