Ex-Malacca governor laid to rest
MALACCA: Former Malacca governor Tun Syed Ahmad Syed Mahmud Shahabuddin (pic) was buried at the Warriors Mausoleum at the state Al’Azim Mosque yesterday.
Tun Syed Ahmad, 83, passed away at 7.45am at his home in Taman Tun Dr Ismail.
The cortege arrived at Malacca’s Dewan Seri Negri in Ayer Keroh at 3.15pm. Streams of local dignitaries and members of the public paid their last respects before the burial ceremony at the mosque at 5.25pm.
Tun Syed Ahmad has the honour of being the first to be buried at the Warriors Mausoleum, a special section reserved by the state this year for burial of local Muslim dignitaries or statesmen.
Born on May 4, 1925 in Kedah, he served as Kedah Mentri Besar (1967 to 1978), Deputy Home Minister (1978 to 1982) and Malaysian Ambassador to Singapore (1982 to 1984), following which he became Malacca Governor until June 3, 2004.
He leaves behind wife Toh Puan Marfuza Sheikh Mohd Osman and 11 children, seven of whom were from his first wife Toh Puan Sharifah Hanifah Syef Alwi who passed away in 1993.
