Let law take its course, Labuan challenger told

KOTA KINABALU: Labuan Umno chief Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman has advised his deputy Datuk Yussof Mahal, who could be subjected to an Anti-Corruption Agency investigation, to let the law take its course.

Yussof, who is challenging Suhaili for the chief’s post in the party polls, had said the investigation was politically motivated.

On Tuesday, Yussof said in a media statement that his company secured two projects worth RM35.3mil in Labuan through open tender.

“I need to protect my image as Labuan MP and deputy division chief,” he said.

The projects involve a market and a school.

His statement came a day after reports said the ACA was investigating a politician for allegedly obtaining contracts worth some RM40mil through abuse of power, forgery and bribery.

Suhaili said Yussof should not undermine the ACA.

“Do you really think it would be possible for a politician to use the ACA to go after an opponent?” he said yesterday.

Suhaili was Labuan MP until Yussof replaced him in the March 8 general election.

“I should know. I’ve had accusations hurled at me before and I’ve been patient and not reacted to them,” Suhaili added.

Asked whether the ACA investigation would have any bearing on the Labuan Umno polls, Suhaili said the outcome was up to the members.

He noted that of the 21 branches (Labuan Umno has 30 branches) that met, 16 had endorsed him to remain as division chief while Yussof received two nominations.

The meeting of another three branches would have to be reconvened.

“The figures speak volumes in terms of the support that he has,” Suhaili said.
