Alleycats reflects the true Malaysian spirit
IT was indeed a very touching moment for me to watch the tribute paid to the popular band Alleycats, which was shown over RTM1 on Aug 11 – “Alleycats Sempena Ulangtahun Ke-40”.
Alleycats certainly brought back fond memories of my younger days in the 80s and 90s when my friends of different races sang along such songs like Senandung Semalam, Hingga Akhir Nanti and Sampaikan Salam whenever they were aired.
Although we were from different backgrounds, all of us (the typical Ali, Ah Chong and Muthu type) could remember the lyrics without difficulty. We would also turn to their songs for solace whenever we were down with problems.
I remember vividly back then that wherever you go, you could see Malaysians of various races openly and proudly playing songs by the Alleycats.
The influence of their music was so great that one would forget one’s racial or ethnic difference while tuning to their songs, which have the true Malaysian flavour.
Alleycats has certainly proven an important fact to all of us Malaysians that racial prejudice could be put aside if we are not manipulated by narrow-minded chauvinists who keep harping on racial sentiments for their hidden interests or agenda.
Perhaps some of our elected politicians today could learn a thing or two from the Alleycats. It is the people’s band in every sense of the word: they promote universal values of love, understanding and humility that go beyond race, religion and culture.
This is genuinely a band that reflects the true Malaysian spirit that every rakyat Malaysia should emulate. Alleycats – You are a legend and you will always have a very special place in my heart. “Terima Kasih.”
