BUKIT MERTAJAM: A Berita Harian photographer alleged he was assaulted by PKR supporters outside Maktab Perguruan Tuanku Bainun where the nominations for the Permatang Pauh by-election were held on Saturday morning.
Siren Nafiz, 26, who suffered bruises on his body, lodged a police report on the alleged assault at the Seberang Jaya police station.
Siren, in his report, also claimed that the PKR supporters took away his camera, lenses and flash worth about RM15,000.
Siren said the incident occurred at Jalan Penanti-Mengkuang Titi under the Butterworth-Kulim Expressway flyover at about 1.30pm.
He said he had climbed onto a four-wheel drive vehicle belonging to Barisan Nasional supporters to capture the view of the crowd when a PKR supporter pulled him down, causing him to fall.
He alleged that some 20 PKR supporters surrounded and dragged him for about 10m.
“They kicked and punched me. My camera, lenses and flash were all taken away. Luckily, one of the PKR supporters came to my rescue and sheltered me from further beatings."
Siren said a foreign press photographer Halim Berber, from the HBL Press News in France, was also assaulted when he tried to pull him away from the mob.
This is the second case involving PKR supporters and the media. On Aug 4, Guang Ming Daily photographer Loh Hoay Hoon, 25, lodged a police report saying she was assaulted by a group of people the previous night as she was leaving after covering a ceramah (political address) by PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
She claimed that PKR supporters had tailed her to the carpark after the public forum around midnight and surrounded her, adding that she was kicked, choked and hit on the head.
