Cabinet to get nuke proposal

MALACCA: The Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry will submit a comprehensive proposal to the Cabinet later this month on the use of nuclear energy as an alternative energy source.

Minister Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili said the proposal to the Cabinet represented the first step towards serious consideration of the use of nuclear power before more concrete policies could be drafted.

“After it is tabled to the Cabinet, an announcement will be made that will indicate our commitment to make further preparations if needed,” he told reporters after opening an international conference on radiation protection yesterday.

He noted that there were various aspects that had to be considered such as political will and policies, development of trained and expert manpower, and transparency as required by international atomic agencies, including location, public awareness and acceptance.

“Public awareness and acceptance is crucial as the use of nuclear power used to be an issue in Europe during the 1960s and 70s.

“However, major changes in public perception since then has resulted in 35% to 40% of the EU’s power being generated by nuclear energy,” he said.
