1,000ha land for Perak independent schools

By CLARA CHOOI

IPOH: The Perak government has approved 1,000ha of land to be given to the state's nine Chinese independent schools.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin announced Saturday that the state's executive council had already approved the allocation in principle but had yet to identify a location.

"We are doing this to show the state's recognition and appreciation of these nine Suwa (independent) schools for we know that they have survived all these years without a single bit of government aid.

"Since the state government has limited funds, we decided to help the schools by giving land," he said before launching the centennial celebration of SM Yuk Choy (Suwa) in Jelapang here.

"The profits reaped from work done on the land can be shared equally amongst these schools," he added.

Later at a press conference, Nizar said the state government would ask the nine schools to jointly form a company to manage the land.

"We have already approved an annual allocation of RM30,000 to all independent schools but we are aware that the sum is too small and insufficient to fund the school's operations.

"As such, allowing them to manage their own piece of land is for the long-term benefit of the schools," he said, adding that the state was still in the process of searching for a suitable site.

SM Jelapang spends some RM1mil annually for its school operations and gets its funds through private donations.

Nizar added that since it would take several years before the schools could benefit from work on the land, the state government would continue awarding them the annual RM30,000.

"Later, if they are able to stand on their own, we may stop giving the allocation," he said.
