‘Muhyiddin wrong to seek PM’s resignation’
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno vice-president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin should not have asked the Prime Minister to step down as Malaysia practised democracy, said Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim.
“In a democratic country, such action should not take place because we need to respect each other’s views,” he said after attending a book launching ceremony organised by the Malaysian National Institute of Translation here.
He said urged Abdullah to act against Muhyiddin, who had said that Abdullah should rethink his transition plan to step down by 2010 as the time frame was too long.
“If the Prime Minister thinks the minister (Muhyiddin) is not qualified or clashing with him and that action has to be taken against him, then he should do it,” he said.
On Malaysia’s top envoy in Washington being summoned to the State Department on Friday, Dr Rais said it was not a surprise because similar actions had occurred before.
“Malaysia, with the three major races, has to always ensure that racial, cultural and religious sensitivity is not raised by any party.
“If something touches on such sensitivity, the authority has the right to exercise the ISA (Internal Security Act),” he said.
He said the envoy had informed Washington that the preventive law was used to ensure national security.
