Now Anwar wants PM to convene Parliament by Tuesday

KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has again moved the deadline for him to form the new Federal Government, this time calling on the Prime Minister to convene an emergency session of Parliament before Tuesday for a no-confidence motion to be tabled against him.

The date is just a day before Anwar is due to appear in court for his sodomy case.

Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has rejected the request, saying: “After Ramadan, Parliament will sit again. Take advantage of the meeting to do anything.”

Anwar, who is the PKR de facto leader, had said earlier this week that he had written to the Prime Minister to seek a smooth transition of power. He had earlier claimed he would be able to form the Government on Sept 16.

Abdullah also said he had no plans to use the Internal Security Act against anyone.

“So, if someone feels that he will be detained under ISA, maybe he feels guilty. I don’t know about that.”

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia said the Parliament Standing Orders allowed only the Prime Minister to call for an emergency session.

And even then, he said the PM would have to provide 14 days notice for such a session to be called.
