More calls for action and police reports against Ahmad

PETALING JAYA: More parties have come out to criticise Bukit Bendera Umno division chief Datuk Ahmad Ismail for his alleged racist remarks.

MCA vice-president Datuk Ong Tee Keat said Barisan Nasional component parties must take action against any members found to have made racist remarks

He said the failure by any component party to take action against its members could lead the people wrongly thinking that the party too shared the same sentiments.

“Each component party should have an internal mechanism to take disciplinary action against any party member who makes racist remarks,” he told a press conference after a visit to Westport yesterday.

Fellow vice-president Datuk Dr Fong Chan Onn said the Government should consider charging Bukit Bendera Umno division chief Datuk Ahmad Ismail with sedition.

“The matter of citizenship for non-Malays should not be questioned, just as some religious issues should not be called into dispute.

“An apology from Ahmad is not enough. A sedition charge should be considered against him,” he said in Putrajaya yesterday.

Bukit Gelugor MCA youth wing urged the state government to strip Ahmad of his Datukship.

Its chief Koh Wan Leong said in George Town the move would serve as a lesson to everyone not to simply make sensitive remarks that could provoke racial feelings.

DAP leaders lodged the report at the Patani Road police station in George Town.

They were Tanjung division youth secretary Ng Wei Aik, Seri Delima assemblyman R.S.N. Rayer, DAP national Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Bukit Mertajam chief Tan Khong Chong and Dapsy national executive committee member Teh Lai Heng.

Ng said Ahmad’s statement had hurt the Chinese community and he should not be let off with just a light slap on the wrist.

Police reports were also lodged by the DAP in Selangor, Perak, Negeri Sembilan and Malacca.

Ipoh Timor MP Lim Kit Siang said the Ahmad furore has become a test case on whether Barisan Nasional ministers and leaders regarded themselves as Bangsa Malaysia.

In Kota Baru, Kelantan Umno has asked fellow Barisan Nasional party Gerakan to stop demanding that Umno penalise Ahmad.

State chairman Tan Sri Annuar Musa said the remarks were made in a personal capacity, similar to the statements by several Gerakan leaders who had suggested that the party exit from Barisan.

“Gerakan has of late issued statements which threatened harmony in Barisan but Umno leaders have been patient.

“But the moderation of Umno leaders, particularly Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, should not be taken advantage of,” he said in a statement.
