Raya cheer for orphans
UNIVERSITI Putra Malaysia (UPM) hosted a buka puasa gathering followed by terawih prayers’ recently.
In conjunction with the event, 180 orphans received Hari Raya donations from the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who is also the university’s chancellor.
The orphans were from SK Sri Serdang, SK Serdang, SMK Sri Indah, SMK Sri Serdang and the Nur Hikmah Orphanage in Kajang.

Looking on are Khaled Nordin (left) and Prof Nik Mustapha (on the Sultan’s left). UPM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Nik Mustapha Raja Abdullah said the programme is an annual event.
In his welcoming speech, Prof Nik Mustapha expressed his appreciation to Puncak Niaga Holdings Bhd (PNHB) for providing the cash donations to the orphans.
This was made possible by PNHB executive chairman Tan Sri Rozali Ismail who is also UPM pro-chancellor.
After the breaking of fast, the Sultan also performed prayers with over 2,000 UPM staff members and students.
Also present were Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Higher Education Department director-general Prof Datuk Dr Radin Umar Radin Sohadi, UPM board of directors chairman Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Syed Jalaludin Syed Salim and pro-chancellor Tan Sri Dr Nayan Ariffin, as well as deputy vice-chancellors.
