‘MyFuture’ to start up next month

By SHAILA KOSHY

KUALA LUMPUR: Senator Datuk Zaid Ibrahim’s foundation for bridging the gap between the races should be up and running by next month.

In an interview with Sunday Star, he said he had submitted the papers to Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad.

On his last day in office as de facto Law Minister, Zaid had told a press conference that he would be setting up a foundation targeting youths called “MyFuture”, where My stands for Malaysia.

Zaid: ‘The foundation will provide training on how conflicts can be best resolved’

“The foundation will be activity-driven to expose youths of different races to each other so they understand each other better,” said Zaid.

He cited the following as possible MyFuture programmes:

  • Taichi classes where Malay youths take part;
  • Using the non-prayer area around a mosque to hold halal trading activities where non-Malays can participate;
  • Using the mosque as a place where community issues can be discussed so the mosque does not become a differentiating place but one of integration; and
  • Cross-cultural exposure like gamelan and music.
Zaid said these activities would compel youths to understand the richness and diversity of Malaysian life.

“The foundation will provide training on how conflicts can be best resolved and show how engagement will deepen appreciation of one another.”

The foundation would be financed through fund-raising, said Zaid, who served in the Cabinet for just six months.

He resigned following the arrest of three civilians - a journalist, a Member of Parliament and a blogger - under the Internal Security Act on Sept 12.
