Race Relations Act is redundant, says Lian Hoe
KUALA LUMPUR: The proposed Race Relations Act is redundant as there are other laws to ensure racial harmony in the country, said Wanita Gerakan chief Datuk Tan Lian Hoe.
She said there were many laws such as the Sedition Act that could be used against anyone, including political leaders, who made insensitive remarks and cause racial tension.
Tan, who is Deputy Information Minister, said the proposed Act would only encourage racial segregation rather than instil the spirit of Bangsa Malaysia as the people would become more conscious of racism.
“We have been independent for 51 years and it is time that we should be able to accept one another as brothers and sisters and introduce ourselves as anak Malaysia instead of Chinese, Indian or Malay.
“The proposed Act will make the rakyat more conscious of racism,” Tan said after launching the 2008 Global Entrepreneurs Convention at the Putra World Trade Centre here yesterday.
