Hijackers leave RM2.7mil behind

KAJANG: Two men hijacked a security van carrying RM4.5mil cash in 15 bags but their getaway car was too small for the bags and they had to leave behind RM2.7mil in nine bags.

The incident occurred at 11.25am yesterday after the van stopped to fill up an ATM in the Tesco hypermarket in Saujana Impian here.

Three guards, one of them armed with a pump gun, had gone to the first floor of the building, leaving behind two unarmed guards to look after the van.

Moments later, two men in a Perodua Kelisa drove beside the van and pulled out a pistol, ordering the guards out of the van.

One of the suspects then drove the van to the Bukit Duyong rest and recreation area almost two kilometres away, followed closely by his accomplice in the Kelisa.

There, the robbers transferred six bags containing RM1.8mil into their car before realising that their big plans had not included a big enough car.

Unable to fit all the bags in the car, they drove off with six bags, leaving the rest, containing RM2.7mil, in the back of the van.

Kajang OCPD ACP Shakaruddin Che Mood confirmed the incident, adding that the five security guards, aged between 20 and 30, had been detained to assist in investigations.

“We are not ruling out the possibility that one or several guards could have had a hand in the robbery,” he said.

Police have also taken the video surveillance tapes from the hypermarket for analysis.

ACP Shakaruddin urged witnesses or those with any information about the robbery to call the nearest police station.
