‘Spirit’ takes students to Sg Lembing
STUDENTS of SMK Tanjung Lumpur who were affected by hysteria were taken to Sungai Lembing to allow a spirit they claimed had possessed them to leave, Utusan Malaysia reported.
Reporters from the daily who chanced upon the students, teachers and a traditional medical practitioner while covering the floods in the area said a source told them the students had requested to be brought to the river, claiming the spirit wanted to be left at the venue.
However, the source said the ceremony was unsuccessful as the spirit changed its mind and decided not to leave, and instead asked to be taken to Panching or Teluk Chempedak.
Declare Sept 16 a public holiday
> If the proposal to declare Sept 16 a public holiday to commemorate the formation of Malaysia is intended to celebrate a new government, as publicised by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, it would be the same as any other day, said Faizal Riduan in an editorial in Sinar Harian.
Although it is said that increasing the number of public holidays would affect productivity, there is no data to prove so, he added.
“Singapore has 11 holidays while countries like Germany, Japan and Taiwan have 16,19 and 22, compared to 14 days for Malaysia, but they still remain economic and industrial powerhouses,” he said.
He said the people needed to be more aware of the country’s history instead of declaring another day a public holiday.
“What is more important is our realisation, and if we have reached the qualities aspired to by our historical figures. If not, the public holiday would be the same as other public holidays, annual leave and medical leave,” he said.
