Unicef: Protect children of Gaza
KUALA LUMPUR: Unicef wants all parties to the conflict in Gaza to abide by their international legal obligation to ensure children are protected and essential humanitarian supplies and support can be received.
“Over half of Gaza’s 1.4 million residents are children, and they are particularly vulnerable in situations of armed conflict,” it said in a statement yesterday.
Quoting the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights, Unicef said a number of children were killed or wounded while on their way to or back from school, and hundreds of children and civilians were treated for shock.
Jordan’s Queen Rania Al Abdullah, who is Unicef’s Eminent Advocate for Children, warned world leaders: “Our humanity is incomplete when children, irrespective of nationality, are victims of military operations.
She called on governments to contribute to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency’s emergency appeal for US$34mil (RM121mil) to meet the immediate needs of Gaza’s innocent civilians.
