Respect outcome of EGM, Najib tells party

KUALA LUMPUR: The outcome of the MCA extraordinary general meeting should form the basis of a leadership solution for the party, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
The Prime Minister said decisions made by the MCA central committee team must reflect the outcome of the EGM, the highest decision-making authority within the party.
The central committee meeting has been scheduled for Thursday.
“I believe and trust that leaders of the party know what’s needed to restore stability and confidence in the leadership,” he told reporters after launching his book entitled Menakhoda Zaman (Helming the Times) at the Mid Valley Megamall here yesterday.
He also hoped the MCA leadership would make quick decision to restore the party and regain public confidence.
The Prime Minister was asked to comment on whether Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat should quit, as both he and Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek were voted out by delegates at the EGM.
Najib believed MCA leaders would take the decision of the EGM as a lesson.
Najib added the decision of the EGM should be respected because it was made by MCA delegates.
“From the decision, if we take a course of action that is based on our wisdom and place interest of Barisan Nasional and MCA above other interests, I am confident that MCA can regain its strength and be restored as a strong and stable party as well as an important partner within Barisan.”
Najib, the Barisan chairman, said it was very crucial that MCA became a strong and stable party.
On whether Umno would extend its assistance to MCA come out of the crisis like what the late Tun Ghafar Baba did in the past, Najib said: “Yes, we are only willing to help for as long as they want us to help.
“I don’t want Umno to be misinterpreted as interfering in the affairs of the MCA. We do not want to interfere in the affairs of MCA. Whatever outcome of the EGM was entirely the decision of MCA members.”
Over 20 years ago, Ghafar assumed the post of acting MCA president briefly to solve the stalemate in the power tussle between Datuk Tan Koon Swan and the defeated incumbent president, Datuk Neo Yee Pan.
On whether the EGM decision would influence Ong’s position as a Cabinet minister, he said: “Cabinet is another matter. We must resolve the issue of the MCA leadership first.”
