Tee Keat one of the few who dares to act

I REFER to your article “Community wants Ong to stay”.

Having been an observer in elections and of the political scenes in Malaysia since 1995, I write to express my profound gratitude to Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat for his unwavering stand in fighting corruption, the moral values he has upheld, and his sense of social justice.

Ong’s unequivocal and vocal stand has come at a great price to him personally, his political career and his family. His quest to uncover and to right the wrongdoings has irked many in the business world, as well as government officers and political personalities connected to the shady deals.

I am not at all surprised with the outcome of the recently concluded MCA EGM. However, the results beg a question: Are the delegates who voted against Ong representing themselves or the Chinese community?

From the ashes of the March 2008 general election, Ong’s unflinching principles against all odds have won over many hearts and souls of Malaysians and have made many of us believe that there is still justice in the political system and hope for the future.

There are many politicians who have the gift of the gab but not many who dare to follow through the eloquent rhetoric to take up the challenge. He is one of the few who dares to act on his words.

To those aspiring leaders waiting in the wings to replace Ong and to those who harbour hope of making a comeback to the MCA leadership, they should look beyond fulfilling self interest to serve and win over a disillusioned community.

KHOO SK,

Shah Alam.
