Najib: Only sure-thing candidates for general election

KUALA LUMPUR: Only those who can deliver victory to Umno and Barisan Nasional will be chosen as candidates in the next general election.

Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said candidates would have to be well-liked and popular with the people.

This was among his message to Umno grassroots leaders at a special briefing here yesterday.

It was his maiden briefing session as Umno president since he took over the helm of the party in March.

“If the division head is not suitable, we can choose others including the deputy.

“A wakil rakyat must have a good attitude. He must be kind and approachable and have good traits and values. He must serve with sincerity and humility.

“In the next election, we will chose candidates who can win for us,” the party president said.

According to a division head, who did not want to be quoted, the party president’s message was “crystal clear”.

“He could not stop reminding us to close ranks and not let instigators and backstabbers get the better of us.

“He also reminded party members to serve the people well and stressed the importance of a strong and solid Umno,” said the division head.

Vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Zahid Hamidi described the atmosphere during the 70-minute briefing, which Najib gave off the cuff, as cheerful.

“It was the first time I am seeing him use his full oratory skills like when he was the Umno Youth chief,” said Zahid.

He said Najib also drew reference to Barisan Nasional’s win in the Bagan Pinang by-election to drive home the point that Umno was still relevant.

Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Sharizat Abdul Jalil said that many were happy that Najib made special mention not only the movement’s role and contribution to the party but also that made by Umno Youth and Puteri.

“I am very happy that he made special mention of Wanita and the meaningful contributions made by the movement,” she said, adding that the recognition is an indication that more women leaders will one day sit on the party’s highest body.
