Government urged to set up Constitutional Court


A WANITA Umno delegate has urged the government to set up a special Constitutional Court to handle cases involving sensitive issues concerning the royal institution, Islam and the Malay language.

Kota Melaka Wanita chief Datuk Rabiyah Ali in making the call said the move was also in line with the government’s focus of enhancing racial integration through the introduction of the 1Malaysia concept.

She said there were incidents where certain quarters, whether direct or through various blogs, made light of the

Constitution including insulting the royal institution, Islam and the Malay language.

“The lack of action against such acts has led to various recent cases such as the ‘cow head’ incident, the Azan issue and the Sultan of Perak being insulted,” she said when debating the movement’s head Datuk Seri Shahrizat Jalil’s keynote address.

Meanwhile, Datuk Bung Mokhtar Radin caused a rumble at the Wanita Umno general assembly when he passed remarks that their level of thinking was “still low”.

The outspoken Bung, who was the representative of the supreme council at the assembly, first praised the movement for its very organised meeting but stunned the delegates when he said their thinking had not moved with times as they were still preoccupied with achieving a 30% quota in everything.

“If women are capable, why stop at 30% when you can go for 100%,” he said, adding it was not wrong to have such aspirations.
