Umno should not be 'showy'
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno leaders and members must change their personality of being too showy and this is keeping people away from the party, Yahya Mat Ghani from Batu division said.
He said people were staying away from the party as there was a perception that Umno was infiltrated by the rich and elite group.
He said the perception must change as the party had lost its morals, especially during nomination and polling day for elections.
"This perception must be changed immediately. We must thank our president for changing the perception of the people through spot checks on the ground," he said when debating the presidential address.
He said there were five "Ps" which Umno should emphasise on.
They were persepsi (perception), perpaduan (unity), peruntukan (allocation), perkhidmatan (service) and pengiktirafan (recognition).
Yahya criticised some leaders and members who could not accept the facts when they could not secure any positions or defend their positions in party elections in March, and stayed away from the party.
He said some even left their branches and divisions.
"The self-centred attitude causes the party to be weak," he said.
Meanwhile, Kedah delegate Datuk Paduka Md Rozai Shafian took a swipe at Barisan component parties, blaming them for the coalition's loss in the last general election.
"The ones who brought us down are the component parties, not Umno.
"We have hit ourselves and given a wake up call. Until today, they did not do anything about their party," he said.
