Najib: MCA's solution must be morally and politically acceptable
KUALA LUMPUR: The solution to MCA’s leadership issue must not only be legally correct but also morally and politically acceptable, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.
The Barisan Nasional chairman said the solution MCA took must be based on these factors or it would never win the support of the Chinese community.
“Firstly, whatever it is, MCA has promised to solve the problems as soon as possible.
“Secondly, solving the problem means not only legally but also morally and politically. Their solution must be based on those factors,” he told a press conference at the end of Umno’s 60th annual general assembly at Putra World Trade Centre here on Friday.
He was commenting on MCA’s decision to hold another extraordinary general meeting to determine whether a fresh elections for the party’s central committee should be held.
Najib, who is also Prime Minister, said there was no time limit for Barisan’s second largest party.
“Give them a bit of time to sort themselves out,” he said, adding that MCA would get some inspiration from Umno which has put its house in order.
“I hope other component parties will take cognisance and Umno has kind of given a good example for them,” he said.
Barisan secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said MCA needed to resolve its crisis as soon as possible, adding that it would have a negative impact on Barisan.
He said MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat should heed the decision of the Oct 10 EGM where the delegates voted for a no-confidence resolution on the his leadership.
He said he was surprised that MCA was calling for another EGM.
“Why call for another EGM? I do not understand. Maybe I do not understand the Constitution,” he said when approached at the Umno general assembly.
He said fresh elections could be held once a caretaker president took over.
“I think he should resign. After these two (Ong and former deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek) are gone, the new caretaker president can takeover. After that, they can call for a fresh polls,” he added.
Meanwhile, Umno vice president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal said MCA should be mindful of Barisan Nasional composition when making their decisions.
“We leave it to the party. MCA members are mature people,” he said.
Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said a fresh mandate from MCA central delegates was the best way for the party to resolve its problems.
He said whoever who was at the helm of the party must have the confindence of its members.
“Once you are voted out by a simple majority or by two-thirds, the effect is the same. You are no longer accepting the vote of confidence from the party,” he said.
