Mentally unstable man goes berserk
By TAN SIN CHOW
GEORGE TOWN: A man with a history of mental illness went berserk and threatened to harm his wife and two children with a parang in a house in Pintasan Cecil 3 here.
It took the police three hours to subdue the man. Two tear gas canisters had to be fired into the premises before the man surrendered at 11pm yesterday.
When a policeman went into the house to try to coax the man to release his family and surrender, the man, in his 40s, slashed the policeman on the hand.
When the family managed to flee the house when the man was not looking, police threw a tear gas canister into the house at about 10.30pm.
The man refused to budge and even threw the canister out, sending hundreds of residents and reporters running for cover. It was only when a second canister was fired that the man finally surrendered.
Scuffle: The man who had earlier tried to harm his family mambers with a parang being hauled up by the police. Earlier, police had tried to coax the man to release his family and come out of the house. However, all persuasion efforts failed. It is learnt that a neighbour had alerted the po-lice after hearing a commotion coming from the house at about 8pm.
She took a look and was shocked to see the man threatening his family.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Azam Abd Hamid said the family members were not injured in the incident, adding that they were now trying to determine what could have triggered his anger.
“One of my policemen was slashed in the hand but his injury is not serious. He was released from the Penang Hospital after receiving outpatient treatment.”
