Parental consent needed for cervical cancer vaccination

KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry will seek parental consent before vaccinating schoolgirls against cervical cancer.

Education director-general Tan Sri Alimuddin Mohd Dom said parents would be required to sign a letter of consent that would be distributed to schools.

"The Education Ministry is still awaiting further development from the Health Ministry," he told reporters after presenting prizes to winners of the National Robotics Competition at the National Science Centre here Friday.

He was commenting on the proposed human papilloma virus (HPV) jabs on about 300,000 13-year-olds in public and private schools from next year.

On the death of a 14-year-old girl in Coventry, United Kingdom shortly after receiving an anti-cervical cancer jab at her school two days ago, he said the Education Ministry had yet to receive any objection from parents on the vaccination exercise.

"Most parent teacher associations welcome the exercise but the Health Ministry must study the best vaccine for the purpose," he said.

The teenager, Natalie Morton, whose death sparked an alert over cervical cancer inoculations had a malignant tumour in her chest, an inquest heard Thursday. - Bernama
