Take advantage of reduced levy on foreign workers: Sabah CM
KOTA KINABALU: Employers should take advantage of the 50 percent reduction of the levy on foreign workers by Oct 31, said Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman.
He said Sabah, with the help of the federal government, would ensure that illegal workers were registered in a special amnesty granted to the state by Oct 31 while those without work permits would be deported.
"Foreign workers registration is an ongoing exercise and an integrated operation to weed out illegal immigrants will be conducted once the deadline of the amnesty is over," he told reporters after opening a briefing on the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP) here Tuesday.
He was commenting on Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein's remarks that foreigners made up 610,104 of Sabah's 3.4 million population with the largest comprising 314,837 undocumented migrants workers and their dependants.
Allaying fears about the large number of foreign workers in Sabah, he said they were not going to live on in the state and would be told to leave once their permits expire.
"The number is big as Sabah has some of the biggest plantations in the country. Definitely, they need foreign workers and the employers must register them," he added. - Bernama
