Cop charged with CBT over exhibits
By M. MAGESWARI
KUALA LUMPUR: A policeman pleaded not guilty to committing criminal breach of trust (CBT) last month over exhibits entrusted to his custody.
Lance Corporal R.Vadi Vello, 46, is alleged to have committed CBT of 24,860 fake foreign currency notes which were entrusted to him as the officer-in-charge of exhibits at Cheras district police station’s Commercial Criminal Investigations division.
L/Kpl Vadi Vello, from Sepang, was said to have committed the offence at the division’s office on Sept 19.
The exhibits -- in the form of 16,621 pieces of counterfeit 500-rupee notes and 8,239 pieces of fake 1,000-rupee notes -- were stored at the division in connection with a Dang Wangi case on the possession of fake currency notes. The exhibits were kept there pending the order to dispose of the fake notes after the case had been settled last year.
If convicted, L/Kpl Vadi Vello could be jailed for up to 20 years, whipped and fined under Section 409 of the Penal Code.
His superior, ASP Norzamani Mat Zin, who is the division chief, had lodged a complaint over the matter on Oct 5.
Upon hearing his charge Wednesday, L/Kpl Vadi Vello, who was clad in a brown jersey and grey pants, appeared stunned.
DPP Lokman Kasim applied to the court to set his bail at RM20,000 in one surety.
Pleading for lower bail, L/Kpl Vadi Vello said he had to take care of his unemployed wife, who suffers from blood cancer, and two young children.
He said his wife was present in court, with his children, to act as his bailor.
When asked by Sessions Court judge Asmadi Hussin how his wife could carry out her responsibilities as a bailor due to her health, he said her condition had not worsened yet and that he needed money for her medical treatment.
He said he had been remanded by the police for seven days and co-operated with them over the case.
“I promise that I will not do this again, I made a mistake once,” he said.
The judge granted bail of RM10,000 in one surety and set Nov 23 for mention. L/Kpl Vadi Vello’s wife P. Suppaletchumy posted his bail.
