MCA sec-gen to arrange meeting between Liow and Ong
KUALA LUMPUR: MCA secretary-general Datuk Wong Foon Meng has indicated that the party might need to rely on an extraordinary general meeting should other efforts to settle the leadership deadlock fail.
For now, he said his first concern was to arrange a meeting between president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat and his deputy Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai within the next two days.
“This is my priority now. We want to find the best solution.
“If we cannot solve the crisis, then we will go back to an EGM,” he told reporters at Parliament Lobby yesterday.
Priorities: Wong speaking to reporters at Parliament House in Kuala Lumpur Tuesday. Wong, who is Senate president, said he had already received a notice from Ong asking him to call for an EGM.
Earlier, former MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Fong Chan Onn said the discussion should not be confined only to Ong and Liow.
“It should include Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek’s side as well as he commands 49.5% of support from central delegates.
“If a new leadership is to emerge without going through an election, it must be through the broad consensus of members,” he said.
Dr Fong also urged MCA leaders to put aside personal interest and explore any avenue possible to settle the crisis.
He likened MCA’s state now to someone warded in the intensive care unit.
“Don’t disconnect the tube or else MCA will not recover,” Dr Fong said.
