MPPP filing suit over King of Tennis fiasco
By MANJIT KAUR
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) will file a civil suit against the organiser of the failed Kings of Tennis event soon in an effort to claim more than RM200,000.
MPPP president Tan Cheng Chui said the amount was for, among others, the restoration of the Esplanade field, rental and parking charges.
He said the council sent a notice of demand to Arianna Events Management for the money in September but did not get any reponse.
“They were given 14 days to respond and the due date was over by the end of September.
“We are in the process of filling a civil suit. That is the best way out,” he told reporters after announcing the council’s 2010 Budget on Friday.
He was asked on the latest outcome of the fiasco where the organiser had failed to keep its promise to restore the field in Esplanade to its original state.
The much-anticipated tennis event was scrapped days before it was set to take place on Nov 14 last year and the council had given the organiser two weeks to remove the stands, courts and other structures. The deadline was then extended by another two weeks.
When the organiser failed to restore the field to its original state, the council decided to do the job itself at a cost of RM52,000 and bill the company for it.
The event was supposed to feature tennis legends like Pete Sampras, John McEnroe, Mats Wilander and Bjorn Borg.
