Announcement causes considerable surprise

KUALA LUMPUR: There was a sense of anticipation when word got around that MCA leaders were meeting at party headquarters.

There had been speculation that the party leadership crisis was about to be resolved and the leaders would be making a statement.

Reporters made a beeline for Wisma MCA even before the official advisory that party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat would give a press conference at 2pm was sent out.

Ong arrived at 1.15pm and went straight to his office.

Half an hour later, Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek walked into Ong’s office, which surprised the press as the two have generally avoided each other since their feud started soon after last year’s party elections.

At about 2.30pm, the press were ushered into the 9th floor meeting room.

Ong together with Dr Chua and other central committee members then entered the room and took their seats.

However, the chair next to Ong - meant for deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai - was empty.

Everyone waited for a while but there was still no sign of Liow.

Party secretary-general Datuk Wong Foon Meng then walked in and had a word with Ong.

The two then went out of the room.

About 10 minutes later, Ong came back into the meeting room, followed by Wong, Liow and vice-president Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha.

The press conference began and there was considerable surprise among members of the media when Ong said that he and Dr Chua had set aside their differences for the sake of the party.

During the half hour long press conference, Ong read out a statement and took a few questions.

There were smiles all around when the leaders posed for the obligatory “greater unity plan” pictures before Ong left.

Dr Chua gave a separate press conference while Liow only managed a few words when leaving the room.
