BUDGET 2010 is geared towards driving the nation towards a high-income economy, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
This was among the three core strategies outlined in next year’s Budget. The other two were ensuring a holistic and sustainable development, and protecting the people’s well being.
“This Budget will also emphasise on advancing the role of the private sector as the driver of economic growth, developing high-skilled human capital and enhancing the efficiency of the public service,” he said in his speech when tabling the Budget in Dewan Rakyat.
Najib said with the theme “1Malaysia, Together We Prosper”, the Budget would shape the foundation for a new economic model and serve as a precursor to the 10th Malaysia Plan.

He said Malaysia should work towards being an agent of change and seek solutions in addressing global economic challenges in order for it not to remain trapped in a middle-income economy.
“We were successful in the past in transforming the economy from agriculture to one that is industry-based.
“Now we have to shift to a new economic model based on innovation, creativity and high-value added activities,” he said.
Being an open economy, Malaysia was vulnerable to uncertainties in external trade and international capital flows, Najib pointed out.
“The 1Malaysia concept that hinges on ‘People First, Performance Now’ motto is based on positive values centred on social justice and acceptance of a multi-racial society.
“This means the needs of the people and the nation must always take precedence. Therefore, every step requires sacrifice and strong cooperation from every segment of the society,” he said.
