Mum who lost 3 children to a hornet attack is still in hospital

By JACK WONG

KUCHING: Tan Wan Chew, who lost all her three young children in a recent hornet attack, is recovering, albeit slowly, at the Sarawak General Hospital here.

The 29-year-old mother is still in a semi-conscious state, one week after she was transferred out of the intensive care unit.

''She is now in a stable condition. She opens her eyes occasionally but is still unable to talk,'' said Tan's cousin at the hospital ward Saturday, the 22nd day of her hospitalisation. The cousin declined to be named.

Tan, who was severely stung by the hornets all over her body, is yet unable to consume any liquid or solid food.

She is helped by a breathing machine with a tube through a hole in her throat.

Seen frequently moving her limbs and body, Tan's mother said her daughter was apparently feeling uncomfortable.

''We are hopeful that she will gain her consciousness and recover fully,'' said the cousin.

Tan is unaware of the death of three children Chen Sze Ting, eight, Sze Ying, six, and Chun Jie, three. They were cremated two weeks ago.

Tan's younger brother Lan Chia, 11, who was among the five attacked by the hornet on a hill near to their house in Sungai Moyan, has recovered.

The five were going for a late afternoon stroll when they were suddenly swarmed and stung by the hornets.

The hornet nests have since been destroyed by the authorities.
