Woman sentenced to 10 years jail for her baby son’s death
KOTA BARU: The High Court here sentenced a woman to 10 years' jail for causing the death of her 10-month-old son.
Judge Mohd Azman Hussin handed down the sentence Tuesday after Bahasniza Abu Bakar pleaded guilty to culpable homicide by causing her son's death.
He ordered Bahasniza, 36, to serve the sentence from the date of her arrest on July 7, 2007.
Bahasniza, who was originally charged with murder, admitted to causing the death of her son, Mohammad Asyraf Noor Aswadi, at an unnumbered house in Kampung Kubang Berulat, Gunong, Bachok between 12.30am and 3am on July 7, 2007.
In mitigation, counsel Firdaus Mohd Yusoff, who represented Bahasniza, said his client had been having family problems since her parents divorced and she was being cared for by her grandmother. He also said that Bahasniza's husband, who had no permanent job, was wanted by the police for crime and drug-related cases and she had to fend for their 10 month-old-baby and five other children.
Firdaus also told the court that Bahasniza had mental problems based on a report by a psychiatric at the Permai Hospital, Johor.
