Indonesian maid dies after abuse

By CHRISTINA TAN

KLANG: The Indonesian maid who was allegedly abused and found locked up in a toilet has died and her case has been reclassified as murder.

Mantik Hani, 36, from Surabaya, suffered multiple injuries on various part of her body and was treated by specialists.

She died in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital at about 10am yesterday.

Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said action would be taken against those responsible for Mantik’s death if she was confirmed to be a victim of abuse.

Two officers from the Indonesian embassy and Selangor executive councillor Dr Xavier Jayakumar were at the hospital yesterday.

Last Tuesday, Mantik, with a wound on her leg as well as bruises on her arms and face, was rescued by police from a house in Taman Sentosa. She was found in the toilet following a tip-off.

A couple, believed to be the maid’s employers, had been arrested and remanded for further investigations.

Hospital director Dr Ghazali Hasni Md Hassan said Mantik died without regaining consciousness.

OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Mat Yusop said the case had been reclassified to Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

The case was initially being investigated under Section 326 for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons.

ACP Mohamad said a post-mortem would be carried out to determine the cause of death.

Police picked up the male employer’s mother, who was also staying in the same house, for questioning yesterday afternoon.

It is learnt police are still looking for Mantik’s former employer and the informer who found her. A 29-year-old woman was arrested on the same day Mantik was found and her husband surrendered to the police the following day.

The victim is believed to have worked in the house for the past two months and was locked in the toilet for two days before she was found.

Mantik did not have any valid travel documents when she was rescued.

Meanwhile, Dr Xavier said the state government was prepared to help if her family needed assistance in sending the body home or if family members wanted to come to Malaysia to claim the body.
