Muhyiddin supports single stream in schools
KOTA TINGGI: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin personally supports the call for single stream schools to promote unity and the 1Malaysia concept.
He, however, said the issue required feedback from many quarters before it can be implemented.
Muhyiddin was commenting on the issue that was brought up in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday.
Bernama had reported Hamim Samuri (BN-Ledang) urging the Government to restructure the education system including introducing single stream schools to achieve racial unity.
He had said that the current multi-stream schooling system did not help people understand the meaning of unity or the 1Malaysia concept promoted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
He had added that the present system should be restructured where all secondary schools would be in a single stream, thus placing all races under one roof.
“The multi-stream schools can be retained at the primary level. The Government can take over and upgrade the secondary schools,” he said when debating the Supply Bill 2010 here Wednesday.
Datuk Ab Halim Ab Rahman (PAS-Pengkalan Chepa) agreed, saying that a study showed that the present education system had no objectives for the well-being of the people.
Tony Pua (DAP-Petaling Jaya Utara) also agreed that all multi-stream schools be united into a single stream at secondary level so that racial unity could be achieved.
He said the single stream schooling system had been mooted by historian and academician Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Khoo Kay Kim.
