DAP renews call to dissolve Perak assembly

GEORGE TOWN: The DAP reiterated its call for an immediate dissolution of the Perak legislative assembly to pave the way for fresh elections in the state following another chaotic sitting on Wednesday.

Its secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said the Barisan Nasional should allow the rakyat (people) the right to choose their own government and only by returning the clout to the people, can justice and democracy be restored in Perak.

Besides scuffles involving Pakatan Rakyat assemblymen, Lim -- who is also the Penang Chief Minister and the Bagan Member of Parliament -- said State Speaker Datuk R. Ganesan had banned the use of visual recording devices, mobile phones and laptops in the House during the brief sitting.

This is in contrast to what is practised in Parliament where MPs can now access the Internet via computers provided to all, Lim said in a statement here Thursday.

“We condemn these double standards as it was (allegedly) reported that Datuk Mohd Khusairi Abdul Talib (Slim-BN) was seen typing at his laptop throughout the proceedings,” he said.

All of the Pakatan backbenchers were subjected to metal detection screening and frisking, he added, saying that this was an infringement and a threat to the democratic rights of elected representatives.

Lim said that when Pantai Remis assemblyman resisted police’s attempts to conduct a bodily search on him, a police officer had purportedly grabbed his private parts.

He also claimed that former State Speaker S. Sivakumar was roughed up while the police were tearing off his robe.
