Herders hit by landfill collapse offered farm in Serendah
By YIP YOKE TENG
PETALING JAYA: The livestock breeders from Kampung Sungai Kertas, Ulu Yam, who sent 30 truck loads of cows, goats and buffaloes to the state secretariat recently to demand aid, have been offered a farm in Serendah.
The Selangor state government will turn a 100-acre area - near the site of an abandoned orchid farm - into an integrated livestock farm for breeders in the Klang Valley.
State tourism, consumer affairs and environment committee chairman Elizabeth Wong said the location of the cattle farms, which were damaged on the evening of Sep 23 when a collapsed illegal landfill sent tonnes of earth, water and rubbish crashing down on them, was no longer suitable for farming.
The collapse was reported to have been caused by a deep trench dug by the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) and Fire and Rescue Department to put out underground fire that had been burning for the last five months.
“Apart from the breeders whose farms were damaged or affected by the collapse of the landfill, we are also inviting breeders who have not obtained licence or do not have a place to rear livestock to make use of this new farm,” Wong said at a Hari Raya Open House on Saturday at Damansara Damai in Sungai Buloh.
She added that breeders at the new integrated farm would only need to pay rental and would not be required to buy the land, adding that those who were interested could apply for the licence from the state.
She said the state was also getting input from the Veterinary Department to provide the necessary facilities for the farmers and breeders.
“We hope the first batch can move in by end of this year,” she said.
State agriculture, natural resources and entrepreneurial development committee chairman Yaakob Sapari, when contacted, said meetings were still being carried out to finalise the details and mechanism of the project.
