Muhyiddin confident of Chinese backing
PORT DICKSON: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is confident that Chinese voters in Bagan Pinang will support Barisan Nasional in the Oct 11 by-election as they are more than comfortable with the country’s new leadership.
Muhyiddin said the Chinese, as other Malaysians, were receptive of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak’s 1Malaysia policy.
“The Chinese voters know about these things and the new course taken by the new leadership. I am confident that all this will translate into votes,” he told reporters after accompanying Barisan’s Tan Sri Mohd Isa Samad to file his nomination papers for the by-election Saturday.
“Every Malaysian is aware of 1Malaysia and other initiatives such as the NKRA (National Key Result Areas) introduced by our Prime Minister.
“We want to move forward and we believe all the communities are with us. Every Malaysian will gain from these new initiatives,” he said.
Chinese make up 10.9% of the 13,664 voters in Bagan Pinang.
Muhyiddin was also upbeat about Mohd Isa’s victory in the by-election, saying he had the advantage of being a local and a mentri besar for more than two decades.
“He has done a lot for the people here. On top of this, he is easily approachable and humble,” he said.
However, Muhyiddin reminded Barisan supporters not to be overconfident.
“I’ve reminded them about the short campaigning period and that they need to work hard. Being overconfident can be dangerous,” he said.
Muhyiddin also advised voters not to be taken in by pledges made by the opposition, saying they had failed to fulfil promises made in Selangor prior to the general election and that the people should not be taken for a ride again.
“The opposition claims that Barisan component parties are having internal problems. But I can say the same about them as seen in Penang, Kedah and Selangor,” he said.
He also promised to look into the plight of estate workers here who had complained of low wages for years.
“They told me that maids get paid more than them. I will look into this because they claim there are months where they are paid between RM300 and RM400 only,” he said.
Muhyiddin also ticked off PAS supporters for allegedly shoving and punching Umno supreme council member Datuk Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman.
“This is very different from the things I read about their spiritual leader Datuk Seri Nik Aziz Nik Mat, who says that Islam is a religion of peace.
“But here we get their supporters intimidating others. What brand of Islam is this?” he asked.
Commenting on former PKR member Shahrudin Abd Hamid not being able to secure a proposer to contest the by-election, Muhyiddin said:
“I always knew he was a non-starter. Even if he had contested, we would not have faced any problem as we are prepared to face anyone.”
